“Fun!” was the adjective that filled London’s Trafalgar Square this morning at the unveiling of American artist Tschabalala Self‘s lively, painted bronze Lady in Blue. Though the design was teased some years ago, the final statue’s larger-than-life exuberance needed a moment to take in.
“I like it!” one spectator repeated with growing confidence. The overall mood was upbeat, a change of tone following the poignant and heavy tribute to trans lives that last filled the spot, courtesy of Mexican artist Teresa Margolles.
Captured mid-stride, Self’s statue is intended to embody the spirit of the modern Londoner, making her a fitting choice for the Fourth Plinth commission, now in its 16th edition. The stylish everywoman certainly makes for an eye-catching sight, popping against the square’s pale stone in her bright blue dress, jewelry, and heels—all inspired by Lapis Lazuli, a “gemstone treasured since antiquity,” Self said in remarks.
